National Association of Social Change Entities in Education (NASCEE) Inaugural Conference 2019

The Zenex Foundation attended the inaugural conference of the National Association of Social Change Entities in Education (NASCEE), which took place on 28-9 May 2019 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Rosebank. The conference was held to launch NASCEE formally and to offer community leaders, activists and strategists a platform to come together and share insights. The theme for this event was “NPOs Working in Education: from Promise to Practice”.

Day one was chaired by Professor John D. Volmink, Chair of Umalusi Council. There was a thought-provoking panel discussion on “Collaborative Partnerships for Education”, an Annual General Meeting (AGM) and a celebratory cocktail function. Day one ended with an announcement of board members. The new members include Dr Veronique Genniker, Lungile Zakwe, Sylvester Moepya, Dr James Keevy, Gail Campbell, Vuyiswa Ncontsa, Sibongile Khumalo, John Gilmour, Estelle Nel and Giles Gillett. Dr James Keevy from JET Education Services was appointed as the chairperson and Vuyiswa Ncontsa from BRIDGE was appointed as the Deputy Chairperson.

After the excitement of the launch and the insightful discussions from day one, the second day was equally enjoyable. It had several panel discussions and plenary sessions and concluded with the board chairperson setting the agenda for 2019-20. Participants left the conference feeling clear about the need for collaborative partnerships for a positive future for education in South Africa.
